ARTHRITIS CARE
Ayurvedic Understanding of Arthritis
In Ayurveda, Arthritis is not just a joint disorder – it is seen as an imbalance of the body’s fundamental energies, or Doshas. Depending on the type and symptoms, arthritis is classified into different conditions such as Sandhivata, Amavata, and Vatarakta.
Sandhivata (Osteoarthritis)
Caused by Vata dosha aggravation, leading to degeneration of bones and joints.
Key Symptoms:
Pain in weight-bearing joints (knees, hips, spine)
Dryness and cracking sensation in joints
Reduced flexibility and stiffness
Joint pain worsens in cold, dry weather or after exertion
Minimal swelling
Amavata (Rheumatoid Arthritis)
A result of Ama (toxins) and Vata dosha accumulation in the joints.
Key Symptoms:
Swollen, tender, and painful joints (symmetrical)
Morning stiffness and fatigue
Loss of appetite, indigestion, heaviness in the body
Joint pain aggravated by damp, cold conditions
Fever and general body aches (in early stages)
Vatarakta (Gouty Arthritis)
Occurs due to vitiated Vata and Rakta (blood).
Key Symptoms:
Sudden, intense pain (often in big toe or fingers)
Redness, heat, and inflammation in the affected area
Shiny or tight skin over the joints
Itching and burning sensation
Symptoms worsen after spicy, sour, or high-protein foods

🚫 What Aggrevates
❌ Avoid cold, dry, and processed foods – They increase Vata and inflammation.
❌ No excess physical strain or heavy lifting – It can worsen joint damage.
❌ Say no to cold water baths and AC exposure – Cold aggravates joint pain.
❌ Avoid long sitting or staying inactive – It causes joints to stiffen.
❌ Limit night-time eating or overeating – Weakens digestion and toxin clearance.
❌ Reduce intake of sour, fermented, or spicy foods – Can worsen inflammation.
❌ Avoid self-medication with painkillers – They mask pain and harm organs long-term.
“Avoid poultry from commercial farms where chickens are injected with antibiotics and hormones. These chemicals disturb metabolic function and aggravate diabetic symptoms.”
